Taiwanese University Wins Gold for Revolutionary Gene Editing Platform

A team from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan has won a gold medal at the prestigious international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition . They were recognized for creating "GenOMe," a new genome integration platform that makes genetic engineering much more efficient . The technology uses a Lego-like, modular design to insert DNA into a cell's chromosome, dramatically boosting the success rate of integration from a mere 0.2% to about 80% . This means that the process of developing new microbial strains, which could previously take anywhere from six months to a year, could now be shortened to just a few weeks or even days . The team's work has significant potential for speeding up both commercial and clinical applications of synthetic biology.
