The Sticky Truth About Your Teeth - Main image

Think about this, why do you brush your teeth? Is it just to keep them from turning yellow, or is it because you want to keep them from falling out?

Imagine your mouth as a tiny city. Every day, lots of different creatures are running around in it, and some of them are looking for trouble. These trouble-makers are called plaque, and they love sweet stuff.

Think of sugar like their favourite treat. When you eat something sweet like candy, soda, or even some sugary snacks, these plaque creatures eat it all up, and they get super strong. Then, they start making acid, which is like a monster that starts eating away at your teeth.

It’s kind of like if you left a sugar cube on your driveway. Pretty soon, a colony of ants would come and start digging away at it, wouldn't they? And if you kept giving them more sugar, they would make a bigger and bigger hole.

Well, that’s exactly what happens to your teeth. The plaque creatures use the sugar you eat to make acid, and that acid starts digging tiny holes in your teeth. Over time, those little holes can get bigger and bigger until they become cavities.

Cavities are like little caves in your teeth, and once you get one, it won’t go away on its own. You have to go to the dentist to get it filled, which is like putting a tiny little plug in the cave to keep the plaque creatures from making it bigger.

But you don’t have to get cavities! Here’s how you can keep those plaque creatures from taking over

  1. Brush your teeth - Brushing is like scrubbing all the plaque creatures away before they can start making acid. You should do this at least twice a day, especially before you go to bed.
  2. Use fluoride - Fluoride is like a superhero that makes your teeth strong so the acid can’t hurt them. You can find it in most toothpastes and mouthwashes.
  3. Watch what you eat - Sugar is the fuel that keeps those plaque creatures going, so try to limit things like candy, soda, and sugary snacks. Instead, eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, which can actually help clean your teeth as you eat them!
  4. See the dentist - Regular check-ups with your dentist can help find any early signs of tooth decay and fix them before they get worse.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your teeth strong and healthy and those plaque creatures in check. So, go ahead and keep brushing!
